As a functional primer material in organic coating systems, clear primer is widely used in construction, industry and special decoration fields due to its high permeability, strong adhesion and alkali resistance.

1. High Penetration and Substrate Strengthening
Clear primer, with a water-soluble modified acrylic emulsion as its core ingredient, penetrates deeply into the pores of substrates like concrete and cement mortar, forming a dense network structure. This penetration significantly increases substrate hardness (for example, by over 30% for mortar and putty layers) while also strengthening adhesion to the substrate, preventing cracking or peeling of the topcoat due to substrate loosening. For example, in a stone-like paint system, clear primer ensures a long-term, secure bond between the topcoat and the substrate.
2. Strong Alkali Resistance and Sealing Properties
For newly constructed walls or incompletely cured substrates (such as new mortar layers with a moisture content greater than 8%), clear primer uses a chemical sealing action to block the penetration of alkaline substances (such as calcium salts and hydroxides). Its alkali resistance prevents fading, chalking, or whitening of the topcoat caused by alkali reversion. Experimental data shows that using clear primer can extend the life of the topcoat to over 10 years, especially in coastal areas or high-humidity regions.
3. Optimized Adhesion and Waterproofing
The clear primer forms a micro-nano bonding layer on the substrate surface, improving the topcoat's adhesion by over 50% while also providing vertical waterproofing. In humid environments like basements and tunnels, its water pressure resistance prevents water vapor penetration, preventing bulging or mildew in the topcoat caused by water absorption. For example, Nippon Paint's universal penetrating alkali-resistant clear primer has been shown to withstand 0.5 MPa of water pressure in laboratory tests without leaking.
4. Fast-Drying and Easy Application
The clear primer has a tack-free drying time of just 30 minutes (at 25°C), reducing the recoating interval to 2 hours, significantly improving application efficiency. Its one-component formula eliminates the need for on-site mixing and supports various application methods, including spraying and roller application. Its flexible dilution ratio (up to 20% water can be added to adjust viscosity) allows for adaptability to different substrates and application environments.
5. Environmental Protection and Weather Resistance
The water-based formula has a VOC content of less than 50g/L, meeting national environmental standards, and produces no irritating odor during application. Its weather resistance also resists UV aging, maintaining colorfastness and preventing chalking for over 10 years in outdoor environments. It is particularly suitable for protecting basecoats under metallic or stone-like paints.
6. Compatibility and Expandability
The clear primer is compatible with a variety of topcoat systems, including latex paint, metallic paint, and stone-like paint, without affecting the decorative effect of the topcoat. Some products incorporate bio-based inorganic hardeners (such as 117 water-based paint technology) to enhance the hardness and chemical resistance of a one-component clear primer to two-component levels, meeting the needs of high-end industrial corrosion protection.
